CPPH Accomplishments
Over the past eight years, CPPH has organized and sponsored numerous activities to broaden the policy debate and bring attention to the changes in public housing and how they specifically affected public housing residents. More generally, CPPH has sponsored research and public events to demonstrate
how government policies reduce people’s ability to have decent and safe housing conditions in Chicago and nationally. CPPH has been instrumental in linking public housing residents with supportive organizations in the struggle to protect public housing. The following are examples of our accomplishments:
-Sponsored key research on the Cabrini Green Redevelopment Plan in 1997 that assisted in increasing the number of public housing units and resident control of the future development
-Sponsored a 1997 video titled, “Mixed In, Not Mixed Out,” about the public housing crisis in Chicago, which has been shown to thousands of church and civic organizations
--Produced a 1998 series of public access television shows highlighting the dilemma of public housing residents in Chicago
--Successfully negotiated in 1999 with the CHA to include a Relocation Contract as part of the CHA rental lease agreement
--Organized annual Juneteenth event for the past seven years which has had attendance from a high of 1,500 to several hundred to protest the demolition of public housing without adequate replacement units
--Successfully pressured the City of Chicago, Chicago Housing Authority, and HUD to sponsor a rental market study in 1999
--Organized in December 2003 a Public Hearing at the Chicago Federal Building attended by most of the Chicago U.S. Congressional Delegation to discuss and make recommendation to improve the federal HOPE VI public housing redevelopment program
--Organized in April 2004 a forum attended by 250 mostly public housing residents to discuss the status of the CHA’s social service relocation program and ways to improve it.
--Organized historic visit with Mr. Miloon Kothari, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing. Mr. Kothari flew to Chicago on April 25, 2004 to specifically meet with public housing residents at Cabrini Green. Mr. Kothari is the international community’s highest-ranking expert on housing issues, and he reports directly to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland.
